Study Abroad Courses
During Maymester 2016, the Department of Communication completed another highly successful Study Abroad trip to Ireland! This year, I (Dr. Emily Ryalls) taught a special topics course, Gender and Media Outside the U.S., to 12 MSU students. The group joined the 100-year anniversary celebration of the 1916 Irish Rebellion while in Dublin (featured in the films1916 and Michael Collins). While in Belfast, we saw the incredible street murals featured in the documentary Art of Conflict, and visited the Titanic museum. In Derry, a walking tour of the city paid particular attention to the monuments that marked what was supposed to be a peaceful protest (featured in the film Bloody Sunday). The trip was topped off with a visit to the incredible Cliffs of Moher, which figure prominently in many media texts, including The Princess Bride and The Bachelorette.
I plan to teach Gender and Film Outside the U.S. in Greece during Maymester 2017. If you are interested in more information, send me an email (email@example.com)! Now, see below for some insight on the trip from a student’s perspective.
Note From Study Abroad Student:
Hello! I'am William Folkes, a senior communication major here at State. I went on the trip in Maymester 2016 and really did have an amazing time. I signed up for Dr. Ryalls’s course for the selfish yet understandable reason of just wanting to travel and see Europe. This study abroad class is a great avenue for that. I traveled with our class, while keeping personal freedom to also do what interested me on the trip. I found out quickly, though, that I enjoyed the class and topics we were covering as well. They were interesting, valuable and relevant, and I am so glad that I got more than just a travel opportunity out of the experience.
If you're interested in history, the arts, culture or travel, then this is definitely right up your alley. Through this class I saw literal natural world wonders, visited beautifully unique cities, and met people from all over the world. I HIGHLY recommend this trip, but to also do a bit of traveling traveling after the class is finished. I went to Munich to visit a friend after our Ireland trip and had a great time for a fairly cheap price.
I can honestly say that the trip to Ireland was one of the best experiences of my life. Dr. Ryalls is an awesome teacher, but also a great part of the group. If you like travel and are open to stepping outside of your comfort zone just a little, you will have a fantastic time. I can personally guarantee that.
