Antigone
- by Sophocles
Translated by David Greene - Theatre: Mainstage (Musical Setup)
The nineteenth century German philosopher George Hegel stated that Antigone was a play that revealed “a collision between the two highest moral powers . . . the public law of state and the instinctive family love and duty towards a brother.” This Greek tragedy by Sophocles is one of three plays concerning the character of Oedipus, of which Antigone was the earliest, written about 441 B.C., and Oedipus at Colonus was the last, written about 406 B.C. Written anywhere from 429-425 B.C., Oedipus the King was called “the perfect play” by the Greek philosopher Aristotle in the 4th century B.C.
Along with these two aspects of love, other themes of power and mortality; of free will and that of fate; of determination of individuals; and of the expected reality of women in society are all woven into this timeless classic. The play’s examination of civil disobedience, where individuals have chosen to fight for justice rather than preserve their own personal safety (in this case, the female Antigone defying the king’s orders), can be admired throughout history, as much in Greece in 5th century B.C. as in our global society of 21st century A.D.
The production is part of the Shackouls Honors College “Classical Week 2012,” a celebration of Greek, Roman and other cultures of the ancient world.
There will be a “talk back” at the conclusion of each night’s performance exploring an aspect of ancient Greek society from both scholarly and performance perspectives.

Love Letters from Shakespeare
- A night of music, dance and sonnets
- Theatre: Mainstage (Musical Setup)
It has been said that Shakespeare’s Sonnets bring us a world of meaning---its joys and sorrows and its passions and torments---set to some of the most beautiful English ever written. This imaginative production of selected and well-known sonnets deals with themes of time, beauty and mortality and framed in this “season of the love”. Original music, choreography and narration will tie these powerful rhythms together and guide the audience through this special and unique presentation.
At the conclusion of each night’s performance, MSU scholars will lead discussions on the various themes of love and the place of the sonnet throughout literature.
Love Letters will be the beginning of several days of activities under the auspices of the Institute for the Humanities entitled Shakespeare: From Page to Stage. These activities will include community events, workshops for high school, community college and university students, and a performance of Twelfth Night by the American Shakespeare Center. The Twelfth Night performance is a part of MSU’s Lyceum Series and a Cross College Research award through the Office of Research and Economic Development.
Members of the Education Program at the American Shakespeare Center were consultants for this presentation.
