Student Spotlight
Alicia Margerum

By: Zoie Henson, student PR Intern

Alicia MargerumAlicia Margerum is a senior communication major from Poplarville, Miss., majoring in communication with concentrations in theatre and communication studies. Margerum is involved in Theatre MSU and works as the organization’s scenic designer. In the future, she plans to work in scenic design professionally.

Margerum was nominated by her professor, Jesse Wade, who said “Alicia has been putting in a ton of hard work as the scenic designer and paint charge for our shows this season. Her skills are growing more and more with each project she completes, and with her about to graduate it would be awesome to recognize her for all of the time and effort that she's given this department.”

Why communication?
I feel like communication is such an interesting field that dictates a huge part of our lives, even when we don’t realize it. This major has a variety of really cool concentrations that support that notion, but my favorite concentrations are of course Theatre and Communication Studies.

Best memory in the Department?
My best memories in the department all revolve around Theatre MSU in some capacity!

Advice for incoming communication students?
The discussions that go on in classes are one of the best parts of this major. Don’t be afraid to speak up if you have something to add, but being an active listener is a must.

Best advice you’ve received from a professor?
Don’t apologize for getting things wrong because you are learning, and that is part of the process.

Favorite class?
Our department offers a lot of Special Topic classes and those are always my favorite. I highly recommend taking a special topic class because they are always an experience.

If you were singing karaoke, what song would you pick to sing?
I Love Rock 'n' Roll. I was a really big fan of the movie Crossroads as a kid, and they sing this song at karaoke. It’s always been the first song to pop into my head when karaoke comes up. It’s also a song most people know, so it’s pretty fun for everyone.

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Cheese Lasagna with tiramisu as dessert. These are a bit time consuming to make, but it’s my go to meal for special occasions. If I could only have one meal, I’d want it to be this one.

What’s the most interesting thing that you’ve read, watched or listened to lately?
I saw a production of Hadestown recently in Memphis. It was my first time seeing the show and it was absolutely incredible.

If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with that extra time?
I would probably read more. I love to read but it feels like there just isn’t enough time in the day for me to read as much as I’d like.
