Faculty Spotlight
Heather Gholson
Heather Gholson, originally from Burkburnett, Texas, received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing at Texas A&M University and her Master of Science in Strategic Communication at Arkansas State University.
After graduating from Texas A&M, Gholson worked in marketing roles focused on sales and advertising before spending six years as a communications director in the nonprofit sector. She also owned a business in Texas where she helped startups build their branding and messaging from the ground up.
Gholson has experienced both large teams with significant budgets and working independently, which has shaped how she approaches communication and teaching her students.
“I’ve learned that public relations is most impactful when it has a seat at the table. When I understand both the goals of an organization and the needs of its audiences, that’s where strategy and creativity meet. I enjoy bringing my years of professional experiences to my students. Public relations is such an exciting career field,” said Gholson.
Gholson started teaching at MSU in 2024 as a part-time lecturer and became a full-time instructor in fall 2025. She has taught Introduction to Mass Media, Public Relations Multimedia, Public Relations Case Problems, and Public Relations Writing during her time within the department.
What is your favorite part of being an Instructor?
My favorite part is that moment at the end of the semester when everything comes together for students. Seeing their confidence grow, watching them take ownership of their work, and then hearing how they can use the skills for internships and careers makes it so exciting to me.
A favorite memory from the department?
One of my favorite memories was sitting in my first faculty meeting in August. Dr. Likes was trying to bring the room to order, but everyone was so excited to see one another after the summer break that it took a while to quiet down. In that moment, I realized how much the faculty genuinely enjoys working together. Seeing that sense of connection and community made me even more excited to begin building relationships and becoming part of the department.
Any funny stories from McComas?
I was wandering around McComas trying to find a classroom when I finally stopped and asked a student for directions. As they were helping me, they glanced at the faculty photo on the hallway screen, looked back at me, and said, “Wait…aren’t you on that screen?” McComas (and students) keep us all humble.
Best advice you have for your communications students?
My best advice for college students in communication is to truly care about people and take the time to understand your audience. Strong communication is built on empathy, listening, and building genuine relationships. When you understand the people you’re trying to reach, you can communicate in ways that are meaningful and impactful.
Favorite part of working in the communication field?
My favorite part of working in the communication field is that, at its core, public relations is about relationships. I love getting to know people, building connections, and creating mutually beneficial partnerships. I also enjoy the mix of strategy and creativity—finding thoughtful ways to communicate ideas and help organizations connect with their audiences.
If you didn't work in communication, what could you see yourself doing?
If I weren’t working in communication, I’d maybe consider coaching. This year, I’ve had a blast helping to coach a tennis team, and it’s been such a rewarding experience. Watching the players improve and come together as a team is honestly the best part. It reminds me a lot of teaching—I love seeing my students learn, grow, and land awesome jobs. I really feel blessed to be doing what I’m meant to do, which is teaching communication!
If you could only watch one film for the rest of your life, what would it be?
The Devil Wears Prada. It celebrates strong female leadership while reminding us not to lose ourselves in chasing success. The Devil Wears Prada 2 is coming out soon, and I can't wait!
What is your favorite spot in Starkville? (Restaurant, coffee shop, boutique, park, anything!)
My husband works at MSU as well, and we love spending time at the Sanderson. It’s fun to be around students outside of the classroom — and we’ve even challenged a few to pickleball matches on the new courts at the Sanderson Center.
How do you like to spend your free time?
Outside is my happy place. Whether it’s fishing, hunting, playing tennis, or rollerblading around campus with my kids, I love staying active and being outside.
Do you have any human or furry children?
I have a 13-year-old son, Sam, and a 12-year-old daughter, Kate, and a 3-year-old dog named Sarge. (Sarge is definitely in charge!)
What is your favorite location you have ever traveled to and why?
Yellowstone, without a doubt. I love being outdoors, seeing wildlife up close, and taking in how beautiful and powerful nature can be — it’s hard to beat.
