Hernandez receives MSU Excellence in Advising Award

Dr. Terri Hernandez, a professor in Public Relations, was named the 2025 faculty recipient of the Irvin Atly Jefcoat Excellence in Advising Award. Hernandez was evaluated on effective advising practices, including availability to advisees, meeting advisees in informal settings, perception by colleagues of nominee's advising skills, evidence of student success in the academic arena, frequency of contact with advisees, mastery of institutional regulations, policies, and procedures, monitoring of student progress toward academic and career goals, among other qualities.

Hosted by the Starkville-MSU Chapter of the Public Relations Association of Mississippi, or PRAM, the event included the announcement of the inaugural John E. Forde Mentorship and Service Award.

Mississippi State University's Broadcast & Digital Journalism Instructor Victoria Bailey interviews Laken Laird, who reflects on her early time as a Mississippi State University student, transitioning into public relations, and her current role as a graduate assistant to the award-winning student-led newscast, Take 30 News. Laken is also an instructor and works on Ph.D.-level courses. Laird is also the Communication Department's Graduate Assistant of the Year for 2024. Laird offers advice to journalism and PR students ahead of graduation. Laken also discusses how communication, accepting all challenges, and storytelling are vital to any profession.

Meaghan Gordon is in year 12 of teaching in the Mississippi State University Department of Communication. Originally from Carthage, Gordon attended MSU, receiving a bachelor’s in communication with a concentration in public relations. She then moved on to receive her masters in public relations and advertising from the University of Alabama.

The Lantern Awards annually recognize outstanding public relations achievements across Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and the Florida panhandle.

MSU Communication graduates, Blaine and Corie Walters, have brought a big-city feel to small downtown Columbus, MS. The experience of shopping for a wedding dress and getting fit for a tux is not an easy endeavor. Their wedding boutique, The Bride & Groom, seeks to provide elegance when shopping for the big day. The Bride & Groom opened in 2012 in the heart of downtown Columbus with Blaine and Corie seeking to bring Columbus and the Golden Triangle a big-city elegant experience to those shopping for their big day.
