Department of Communication, Media & Theatre

The Department of Communication, Media & Theatre is within the College of Arts & Sciences and currently serves approximately 500 majors. Communication majors may choose from one or more of the following concentrations: Broadcasting & Digital Journalism, Communication & Media Studies, Print & Digital Journalism, Public Relations, and Theatre.

MSU faculty, students earn national honors at Broadcast Education Association Festival

Mississippi State University faculty and students earned multiple national honors at the Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts this spring, one of the premier competitions for student and faculty media work, highlighting excellence in film, scriptwriting, audio and broadcast production.

MSU Journalists earn 28 awards at Southeast Journalism Conference

Mississippi State University student journalists earned 28 awards at the 2026 Southeast Journalism Conference earlier this semester, securing high-ranking placements in more than two dozen categories and demonstrating excellence across student media platforms.

Students break MSU communication awards record at MAB

Students representing Mississippi State University’s Department of Communication, Media and Theatre, along with MSU’s radio station WMSV-FM 91.1 The Junction, earned more than two dozen student and professional honors at the Mississippi Association of Broadcasters Annual Awards this month, pushing the department past its previous record and to a new high of 102 awards during the academic year.

Lady Rhodes Cox was hesitant to attend MSU since Starkville was her hometown. However, the welcoming spirit of the MSU community quickly outweighed the fact that campus was right in her own backyard. “After visiting other campuses, I realized Mississippi State was so much more welcoming than other places,” said Cox. “It really was home.”

Joshua Cagle, a senior Communication major concentrating in Communication & Media Studies from Huntsville, Alabama, came to MSU to study Mechanical Engineering, but he quickly realized he did not want to sit at a desk for the rest of his life.

Heather Gholson

Faculty

Heather Gholson, originally from Burkburnett, Texas, received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing at Texas A&M University and her Master of Science in Strategic Communication at Arkansas State University. After graduating from Texas A&M, Gholson worked in marketing roles focused on sales and advertising before spending six years as a communications director in the nonprofit sector.
