Multimedia Journalism

Curriculum Guide (Prior to Fall 2026+ Entry)
Technology Requirements

Multimedia Journalism prepares students to report, write, produce, and deliver compelling stories across modern platforms. Students learn the fundamentals of journalism, including clear and concise writing, evidence‑based reporting, ethical decision‑making, photography, digital storytelling, and deadline‑driven editing. They also gain hands‑on experience with audio, video, and on‑camera production, as well as the multimedia tools needed to enhance and distribute their work.

The curriculum emphasizes platform integration and teaches students to move fluidly among writing, photography, podcasting, video production, and live broadcasting. Students learn to operate cameras, microphones, and studio equipment professionally, edit compelling multimedia content, and publish or broadcast their work to real audiences. The capstone experience combines Bulldog Online Newsroom and Take 30 News into a new multi‑platform Take 30 News environment that mirrors the demands of a modern newsroom.

Graduates of Multimedia Journalism are prepared for careers in news reporting, editing, anchoring, podcasting, directing, filmmaking, digital content creation, and behind‑the‑scenes production. Alumni from the legacy programs have gone on to work at newspapers, magazines, digital outlets, and broadcast stations across the country, including the Los Angeles Times, Houston Chronicle, Mississippi Today, Sports Illustrated, the Tennessean, and stations in Tupelo, Jackson, Memphis, Orlando, Milwaukee, and Omaha. Others have built careers with organizations such as ESPN, the SEC Network, universities, corporate communications, extension services, and government agencies.

Students also benefit from a wide range of internship opportunities at local, regional, and national media outlets, giving them the professional experience and industry connections needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
