Addie Thompson

Addie Thompson is a senior communication major concentrating in public relations from Oxford. Thompson is involved in Public Relations Student Society of America, Shackouls Honors College, and Brickfire Mentoring Program. In the future, she hopes to work on the marketing and content management side for small businesses.
Thompson was nominated by her professor, Karyn Brown who said, "Addie is a remarkable student and wonderful person. Her work is superior, and she gives every assignment 100%. She is a critical thinker and one who will excel in the field of public relations."
Why did you choose communication?
I chose communication because I've always loved being creative and making connections with others. I wanted to learn more about how to be a better communicator and how to think strategically and creatively to work behind the scenes of a business.
Best memory in the Department of Communication?
My best memory was probably finishing our Orgs class last semester with our final client presentation. Our group worked so hard all semester and got really close over all the months of work. We were so happy to turn in our completed work, and we ended up winning the best group presentation!
Advice for incoming communication students?
My advice is to take classes that interest you, even if they aren't required! Don't be afraid to branch out and try new classes, organizations, etc., because you may find something you love! I also advise students to get as much internship experience as possible- future employers want to see how you've applied your coursework to real-world situations.
Best advice you've received from a professor?
Dr. Forde really instilled the concept of making connections and networking with those around me. He helped me realize the importance of getting internship experience to learn new skills, make connections, and narrow down my career goals.
Favorite class so far?
Interpersonal Communication
If you were singing karaoke, what song would you pick to sing and why?
I would pick The Way I Loved You by Taylor Swift, I know every word and I think it's such a fun, upbeat song that gets people in a good mood.
If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life what would it be?
Probably avocado toast with a fried egg, I eat it almost every day and never get tired of it!
What’s the most interesting thing that you’ve read, watched, or listened to lately?
It's a longer quote, but I love the excerpt from "Timeless Simplicity" by John Lane about the fisherman and the industrialist. It's basically about our tendency to always be hustling and busy, never taking time to rest. It reminded me that our lives are not meant to be a constant rush of to-do lists and accomplishments. It's important to slow down and actually enjoy each day instead of rushing through them mindlessly.
If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with that extra time?
Probably read and go on runs or walks! I love both of these, and sometimes I get too busy during the day that I don't have much time to read. I love to read at night to unwind before bed.
