Joshua Cagle, a senior Communication major concentrating in Communication & Media Studies from Huntsville, Alabama, came to MSU to study Mechanical Engineering, but he quickly realized he did not want to sit at a desk for the rest of his life.

“I really want to be able to impact people in a meaningful way, and communication seems like the perfect route to do that,” said Cagle. “Classes such as Small Group Communication and Communication and Leadership have equipped me with the skills to go out and make a positive difference in the world!”

Cagle is the secretary of The Inklings, a student-led book club focusing on authors like Tolkien, Lewis and Williams. He also serves as the Preschool Ministry Intern at First Baptist Church in Starkville. Cagle says the internship has been a great experience being able to spend time teaching children and engaging with families in the community.

Cagle recommends students accept they still have a lot to learn, and college should be a time to develop and learn.

“You don't know everything, and that's okay,” said Cagle. Take it easy, don't get too overwhelmed, and don't forget to have fun! College is a time to learn and grow, so take advantage of every opportunity you get! You’ve got this!”

The best advice Cagle has ever received from a professor is to, “Just put your name out there.” Cagle offers that looking for a job can be daunting and discouraging, but he encourages others to make connections and to not be afraid to pursue what fascinates them.

What's your dream job?
“When I was growing up, I always wanted to be an astronaut. Now, I would love to work as a counselor or for a nonprofit organization helping others.”

Favorite place on MSU's campus?
“McComas Hall... just kidding. I love being outside, and there is a great little spot to sit and read behind Giles Hall. There are some chairs and tables, a couple fountains, and I am usually the only one out there. It's a super peaceful little spot!”

Guilty pleasure show?
“I don't watch as much television anymore, but I do love to watch The Office. It's great to throw on in the background while doing homework or studying.”

Davis Wade Stadium or Dudy Noble Field?
“I have to go with Davis Wade. Nothing beats the cowbells and the electric atmosphere of SEC Football under the stadium lights.”
