About PRISM

The Department of Communication’s Public Relations & Integrated Student Media agency (PRISM) fosters a dynamic learning environment where students are encouraged to apply classroom knowledge to strategic communication campaigns unfolding in real time.

PRISM members are provided the opportunity to collaborate with a variety of non-profit and for-profit organizations in and outside the state of Mississippi. Past and current clients include Mercedes-Benz of Tuscaloosa, the Magnolia Independent Film Festival, Shower Power, the Starkville Area Arts Council, OCH Regional Medical Center, MSU’s Department of Geosciences, the Center for Community-Engaged Learning, and many more.

Take 30 News

Broadcasting students produce multiple multimedia programs each semester. Take 30 provides hands-on experience for majors to prepare them for careers. Learn skills in producing, anchoring, writing, reporting, videography, directing, technical directing and more.

Broadcast Meteorology

The Department of Geosciences and the Department of Communication partner to offer a minor in Communication for Broadcast Meteorology students. Many meteorology students complete a minor in Communication to gain the necessary skills needed in news writing, reporting and multi-media production to succeed in the broadcast industry as on-air meteorologists.

Digital Media Center

The Digital Media Center houses the new television studio and control room for Take 30 news and other productions. The MaxxSouth Digital Media Center is a multi-media collaborative space equipped with technology designed to propel teaching, learning, exploration and research among Mississippi State University students, faculty and staff. The newly renovated space features a television studio, an audio and video studio, a collaboration studio, a makerspace, multimedia lab and the CAVS Mixed Reality Studio. The Reflector

The Reflector is Mississippi State University’s award-winning student newspaper, and the oldest student newspaper in the SEC. Since 1884, the Reflector has helped thousands of young writers, photographers, designers, and editors get their start in media. Some of the Reflector’s recent alumni who now shape the national dialogue include:
 
Ross Dellenger, national college football writer for Sports Illustrated 
Elizabeth Crisp Dellenger, U.S. Capitol reporter for The Advocate 
Ben Mims, cooking columnist for the Los Angeles Times

University Television Center/MSTV

The University Television Center/MSTV offers students the opportunity to work directly with professional staff to deliver video products to both on-campus and off-campus clients. Working at the University TV Center also provides students access to broadcast-level production equipment and full-time television producers, providing hands-on education in visual messaging. WMSV-FM Radio

WMSV is the noncommercial, community station on the campus of Mississippi State University. WMSV programs a Triple A Music format. If you are not in the music industry, you probably have no idea what this means. It means that we play artists such as Dave Matthews, Counting Crows, Eric Clapton, The Lumineers, Imagine Dragons, Mumford & Sons, Of Monster and Men, The Killers, Muse and many others who appeal to our listening audience who range in age from 18 - 50 years old. Since its inception in 1994, WMSV has won over fifty state and national awards for its news, sports, and music programming.Students have the opportunity to work as announcers and as production or news staff at the station.
