New & Noteworthy Communication faculty spotlights Natchez in new ‘Hidden History’ publication
A fourth book in the Mississippi “Hidden History” series has been published by a Mississippi State faculty member and journalism advisor. Joshua K. Foreman, an instructor in MSU’s communication department and advisor to The Reflector student newspaper, has released “Hidden History of Natchez,” co-written with Ryan Starrett—a fellow Jackson native and Foreman’s childhood friend.
Dr. Heesook Choi, an assistant professor in Print & Digital Journalism, presented "Pandemic, Communication, and Participation: Exploring the Mediating Role of Emotion, Efficacy, and Knowledge in the Effects of Communication on Civic Participation during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Mexico." This study examined potential mediators of the relationship between news use and civic participation in the context of COVID-19 pandemic in Mexico.
New & Noteworthy Josh Foreman and co-Author, Ryan Starrett, publish Hidden History of Natchez
Hidden History of Natchez is the first of two History Press books by Josh Foreman and Ryan Starrett about one of the most important cities in early US history: Natchez, Mississippi.
Dr. Heesook Choi, an assistant professor in Print & Digital Journalism, presented "Traditional News vs. Political Satire: Fragmented Audience and Discreet Pathways to Political Participation" at the International Communication Association Conference.
Spotlight Ross Dellenger
Ross Dellenger received his Bachelor of Arts in Communication with a concentration in Journalism December 2006. A native of Morgan City, La., he currently resides in Washington D.C. He serves as a Senior Writer covering national college football for the media company, Sports Illustrated.
Spotlight Philip Poe
Philip Poe, a 10-year faculty member for the Department of Communication, is a native of Houston, TX. Poe received his B.A. in Communication-Journalism from the University of Houston, his M.A in Mass Media Studies from the University of Houston, and His Ph.D. in Mass Communication from Texas Tech University.
Spotlight Hannah Blankenship
Hannah Blankenship is a senior double-majoring in communication, with a concentration in print and digital journalism, and Spanish. A native of Huntsville, Ala., Blankenship currently serves as editor-in-chief at The Reflector, plays club soccer and is a part of the Reformed University Fellowship, and she plans to pursue a career as a literary non-fiction author.
Awards & Honors The Reflector takes top honor at MPA Better Newspaper Contest
The Reflector took the top honor at the Mississippi Press Association’s 2021 Better Newspaper Contest, winning first place in General Excellence. The newspaper earned the top award and placed 19 times in other categories. Four Reflector staff members placed first in their individual categories.
Spotlight Marcela Cartagena
A 1999 graduate of MSU, Marcela Cartagena received her Bachelor of Arts in Communication with a concentration in Journalism. Cartagena is originally from Chile and now resides in Chicago, Ill., where she began her own consulting firm, MC Gray Consulting, LLC.
